One of the most important things you can do to prevent the flu is to wash your hands frequently with good hand washing technique. Wash with regular soap and water. It is recommended not to use hot water because it can cause skin irritation over time. Any liquid, bar, or powdered soap will work. Follow these steps for good technique:
-
Turn on the faucet.
-
Wet hands first.
-
Apply soap.
-
Rub hands vigorously with soap and water for 15 seconds (sing Happy Birthday to yourself twice).
-
Rinse hands.
-
Dry hands with a disposable towel, not a multiple use cloth towel.
-
Turn off faucet using the towel.
-
Exit the rest room by grabbing the door handle with the towel, then throw the towel away.
